one of my favorite places in the city

once upon a time i thought jazz was for old people. then for mimi and’s 20th birthday we went to portland and while i was making my itinerary (hit me up for all itinerary needs) i saw jazz bar on top of jazz bar which made me think, “ok maybe they’re not just for old people.” because they all had great reviews and every article i read was saying how going was the best time of their life… yadda yadda yadda. then i forgot about jazz and jazz bars. THEN i had to plan tony and beau’s big nyc trip and one of the things on their list was live jazz (somehow there was even a big jazz in the park festival the days they were there) and there were no shortages of jazz bars with raving reviews, but there was a shortage of ones that we’re gonna let little 18 year old baby beau beau into. and then i never heard about jazz again. and the one day amy went on a date with a man and he took her to our heaven so it was only right that she showed us what heaven looked like.

now onto MY favorite spot (i’ve only been to two and the one that wasn’t this one was the dawn club, also in sf)!!!!!! one summer night… september 26, 2024 to be exact, gabi, amy, and i decided we absolutely had to go out in the city (i think we were supposed to go meet up with one of gabi’s friends and then we never saw her so we went on our own adventure including one of my oakland favorites for another time). and now you should be wondering “where the hell did these girls go?” the answer to your question and all other questions: MR. TIPPLE’S. holy cow i love that place.

first off when you walk in it’s so dark and mysterious because in the front room or whatever you wanna call it, it’s dimmly lit with only a hostest stand and dark red curtains seperating you from the bar. there is a cover/table fee to sit down ($20) but it’s well worth it in my book. this particular night when we were sat the adam kipple quartet was playing and i must say they were a vibe. i tried to upload a video but i couldn’t figure it out so maybe by the next time you read this you’ll be able to see a little clip of them playing. it was also helpful that the man on the far right in the beanie was nice on the eyes and ears hehehehehe. i told him i loved him on my way out but i don’t think he heard me and i think about him once a week. if you read this.. i still love you. jokes jokes jokes… or is it?

what makes mr. tipple’s so amazing is that they have dim sum and i love dim sum. i think that this may have been my second time having dim sum??? i don’t know how i deprived myself for so long. their wontons are to live and DIE for. i would compare them to my wontons in soup from dough zone and that’s saying a lot because i’m in love with those. i think that this first time that we went we ordered two rounds of them. but if i was sitting there and the servers kept bringing them i could mindlessly eat about 6 bowls. ANYWAYS!!! drinks. i was the most jealous of gabi’s drink because she got the money cat (rum, borbon, orange juice, pineapple, orgeat, and citrus) and first of all it tasted amazing, second of all, do you not see how cute the cup is??? anyways my drink was also great (although served in a more standard, less cute glassware) i got the yardbird which was mezcal, pomegrante, lime, and falernum (apparently a ginger, lime, almond syrup from the carribean) and i must say you put two of my favorite things together like a nice smoky mezcal and pomegrante and i have no choice but to be a fan. and finally miss amycheeryolo, who got the seond cutest drink, got the herbs in tonic which is exactly what you think it is: vodka, basil, juniper, thyme, lime, mint, tonic, and seltzer. if you didn’t know now, now you do know, amy always somehow picks the most fire drinks. i would say that i’m pretty good and drinking and picking out drinks most the time but amy has me GOT in the picking department. in amycheeryolo we trust.

one of the highlights was this man. he kinda reminded me of the grandpa from the white lotus. at first he was vibing and having a good time but maybe like 15 minutes in i guess he fell asleep and i really thought we had spent his last moment with him in the jazz club but then he bounced back like nothing happened. sometimes we all just need a little nap. and i mean i fell asleep at the book of mormon ON BROADWAY IN NYC so who am i to talk. also when amy and i went back with tony the other night we realized that man must be a regular or someone important because his spot was PRIMO. i wanna be like him when i grow up.

on my birthday i got drunk and set up a whole plan with tony to go to the city while mom was in vegas and have a night on the town and that… we did. one thing about me is i hate to see a plan fall through and i am always on an adventure to do something. so we called up our girl amycheeryolo because can you go to mr. tipple’s without the persn who showed you the light?? last time we went, we didn’t make resis but were still able to be sat pretty quickly in a nice front and center table (it was a thursday night) but we wised up this time because it was onna be a saturday and everyone lloves mr. tipple’s. this time we were sat in the back corner room but (in my opinion) the best spot because we had a corner booth, closest to the bar, and the only spot back there with an unobstructed view of the band. i am so very glad we ended up making the reservations becausee there were BODIES at the standing space at the bar and i feel like the standing experience is a lot different than the seated one. but anyways; this time around we got to listen to the joe warner quintet who once again, were a vibe. and i’m pretty sure their dim sum menu grew or something???? tony and amy got the lamb and carrot dumplings which they both raved about and i wish i could try but lamb absolutely destroys me like no other, and we all split the chicken wontons with peanut oil and the crispy potsticker which were plant based. one thing i regret not trying was the halibut. mama loves halibut. but you can do no wrong with anything you order at mr. tipples. and for our bevvies, amy again got her herbs in tonic (classy woman), i got the oxford comma (tequila, turmeric, bonal (an earthy apertif), lime, and ginger. anything with ginger and turmeric calls to my heart.. maybe it’s the indian in me. and i’m preeetttyyyy sure tony got the duke’s manhattan which was, bourbon, amaro, vermouth, highland park 12y, and bitters. i tasted it and it was a lot sweeter than i exected because usually when i try a drink of tony’s i grow a little bit of chest hair. and to end the night amy and i both had a glass of the cab sauv, mr. tipple’s deep cut, because who am i not to try a namesake wine? tony and amy said it was the driest wine ever but i was a big fan. i couldn’t put my finger on anything directly in the flavor profile but i do know that it did taste good and wasn’t super tanniny so i was happy. although i will say it was the kind of wine i would say is all bark and no bite.

in conclusion, you all need to go to mr, tipple’s and if you do i wanna go too.

love you always

xoxo,

tata
